Notes on Selected Ancestors of
Charles Scarisbrick (1800-1860)
of Scarisbrick in Lancashire England.

The exact family relationship of the earliest members of the family is not always certain. Records of transferral of lands and estates do not always specify if heirs are sons or younger brothers. An educated guess can, however, be made from their associated dates. The earliest family member from which all relationships are certain is Gilbert De Scarisbrick (d. 1359).

The first recorded member of the Scarisbrick family is Gilbert De Scarisbrick (d. 1238). He was granted land in Scarisbrick from his brother, Simon De Grubhead. They were descendants of the powerful Lathom family.

Walter De Scarisbrick (d. ~1260) had two sons, Henry, his heir, and Adam. Walter granted land at Gosfordsyke (the place where the geese ford the creek), which became Gorsuch. Adam took the name De Gorsuch.

Sir Henry De Scarisbrick (d. ~1420) fought alongside Henry V at Agincourt (1415). He was knighted about this time. His brass hangs in the Scarisbrick Chapel at Ormskirk Parish Church.

Elizabeth Stanley (b. ~1502), wife of Thomas Scarisbrick (1496 - 1530), is described as "natural daughter of Thomas, Earl of Derby". The date of birth of Elizabeth implies this Thomas is Thomas Stanley, the 2nd Earl of Derby.

Elizabeth Scarisbrick, (b. 1515) was the only child of James Scarisbrick (b. 1470) and Margaret Atherton (b. 1485). She married Peter Stanley, second son of Sir William Stanley of Hooton. They had one child, Margaret Stanley, who married Henry Stanley, grandson of George Stanley Lord Strange, son of Thomas Stanley, first Earl of Derby. The issue of this union became the baronets of Bickerstaffe, and later acceded to the Earldom of Derby, after the first branch died out.

Edward Scarisbrick (~1540 - 1599) died with no surviving male issue. He made Henry Scarisbrick, son of Thomas Scarisbrick of Borwick, his heir - on the condition he married Anne Parker, eldest daughter of Anthony Parker and Elizabeth Scarisbrick, daughter of Edward Scarisbrick.

"Inquiry of death of Henry Scarisbrick at Wigan 8 Apr 1609 - Henry married at 'Rudam' co. York, Anne, dau of Anthony Parker of Radham, 28 Jul 1599. He died at Scarisbrick 17 Oct 1608, leaving Anne, his wife "quicke with child" one Edward Scarisbrick (then in his mother's womb and afterwards born), aged at the date of the Inquiry a month and nine days."

Basil Thomas Scarisbrick (~1707 - 1789) was the eighth son of Robert Scarisbrick and Anne Messenger. As such, his succession to the Scarisbrick estate seemed unlikely. He assumed the name of Eccleston after he was named heir in the will of Father Thomas Eccleston, S.J. (d.1725), the last of the Eccleston family.

When Thomas Eccleston (1752 - 1809), son of Basil Thomas Scarisbrick (Eccleston) inherited the Scarisbrick estate in 1789, he took the additional name of Scarisbrick, styling himself Thomas Eccleston-Scarisbrick. All of his children were initially named Eccleston. He also inherited the Wrightington estate from his uncle (mother's brother), Edward Dicconson, in 1807. Thomas died in 1809, and his son William died just three days after.

Thomas Eccleston (1785 - 1833) inherited Scarisbrick on his father's death in 1809. He then assumed the surname of Scarisbrick only. He married Sybilla Farington, daughter of William Farington of Shawe Hall. The sole issue from this marriage was one daughter, who died young.

Charles Scarisbrick (1800 - 1860) firstly inherited the Wrightington estate upon the death of his father in 1809. He then took the name of Dicconson. When his brother, Thomas died without issue in 1833, he then added Scarisbrick to his possessions, and changed his name to Scarisbrick only. Charles began a liaison with Mary Anne Braithwaite in the late 1820's, and she bore him two sons and a daughter. Charles and Mary, however, were never legally married.
