SURNAME  VARIATIONS

It doesn't take much to realise that Scarisbrick is not the most common surname around.  However, it may come as a suprise to many, to know just how many variations there are,
or at least have been over the past 800 years, or so.

Since our surname was first recorded, in about 1200, there have been more than 50 variations.  Many, if not most, are no longer used.  I suspect the reason for such variety is due to the fact that, up until the nineteenth or twentieth century, many did not enjoy the same level of education, as we do today.  As a result, illiteracy was common and when it came to registering births deaths and marriages etc, the spelling of surnames was often left to the official who recorded the details.  (This is just my opinion.  If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.)

I also suspect that, many of these variations have ceased to be used as people have become better educated and have perhaps become aware of the original spelling.  (Again, this is just my opinion.)

It is interesting to note that most of these variations are not 'regional', but actually occured in and around Scarisbrick and Ormskirk, the 'birthplace' of the Scarisbrick Family.

If you have any thoughts about this or are aware of other variations, not ncluded in the following list, please contact me at: ken@scarisbrick.co.uk
